PLUMBING GAUGE TIPS

Consider the Following When Preparing Plumbing Design Documents

  • Insure that gauges selected are compatible with system pressures, temperatures and contents.
  • Dial faces should be sized to allow reading from a standing position. Provide remote read-out for isolated or hard to access monitoring points.
  • Scale range of dial type gauges should be selected to allow normal system operating temperatures/pressures to be centered at the top of the dial face.
  • Provide pressure gauges upstream and downstream of master thermostatic mixing valves, pressure regulating valves, water filters and other equipment that can significantly effect pressure.
  • Provide pressure gauges on suction and discharge of domestic hot water circulating pumps.
  • Provide temperature gauge on discharge of water heaters.
  • Provide temperature gauges on suction side of domestic hot water circulating pumps.
  • Research applicable NFPA Standards for location and types of gauges required.
  • Review equipment manufacturer's recommendations for location and types of gauges required.
  • Temperature & pressure test plugs may be installed but should not substitute the placement of gauges.
